SRU Soccer

Over spring break, I went to the SRU Men's Soccer alumni tournament with my dad who played on the team. I found out that men's soccer at SRU is struggling along with a lot of other sports at SRU becuase of funding being cut. The head coach also recently left for another coaching position and the search is on for another coach. I think it's important that students attend the men's and women's soccer games as well as any other sporting events that they might be interested in. We need to show our support for SRU athletics and hopefully the school with grant them with more funding.

  1. It's weird that you posted this as i was complaining about our funding on my blog. Finding a coach seems to be difficult as we don't have much funding to offer new recruits or to use on trips. Still this has been the story for a couple of years, and we have still seen success. I thank you for trying to get people interested in our program. Extra support always boosts us on the pitch!

  2. I agree with this Kyle. I'm on the track team and funding is a huge issue. Not too long ago for indoor PSACS we had to stay in a hotel that was being torn down in a month because of health and safety violations. It was also $7 dollars a night to stay there. The water was brown and I hardly touched anything. I don't think that was fair because in order to save money, we all had a horrible night of sleep and couldn't perform well the next day.

  3. Thanks for bringing it up Kyle! Volleyball is having the same issues too. I give props to our coaches for doing everything she can to bring in recruits with little funding. As of now we have 8 girls committed and I'm so proud of our coaches for making the trips to extra tournaments to find girls that want to play. We didn't have a great season last year but we are hoping to improve. We love crowds at home games, but we need the support of other SRU students to show the university that our fellow students support us.

  4. I agree with what you are saying about funiding but this is kind of a sore subject really because alot of schools go through the same problems. It seems that football, basketball, and baseball get most of the funding and it leaves the other sports like soccer and volleyball out in the cold. I do agree and i think that students should show support for their school.

  5. I do not know much about the sport teams here at Slippery Rock, but I am learning by reading these posts. Does this make any of you nervous for landing a job when you graduate? I know funding is down on alot of things throughout the country, but does this funding also affect local area school districts? I just wonder if they are cutting their budgets across the board when it comes to physical education and sports teams?

  6. I also agree with lack of funding but unfortunately we are in the same boat as many other state schools. The budget defecates for SRU is extremely large and looks worse in future years. I feel drastic measure have been taken from all areas. I would also direct you to bring all thoughts and ideas to SGA. It is always good to be heard directly. They did just past a 610,539 dollar budget for athletes next year.

  7. I agree that there should be a greater push for SRU students to attend athletic events. A good way to get more attendence is to go to SGA and UPB meeting and try to get funding to advertise and promote games. Part of what they are there for is to hand out a ton of money for student involvemnet. Going to athletic events is the greatest entertainment and environment for SRU students to attend. If enough people get together and organize more of an incentive to attend that would be awesome. Its hard to hear that about the soccer team after they have been playing so well.

  8. I think that we should create more funding for the SRU athletics in any way possible because I agree that it is dumb for some sports to be cut or their funding cut because they aren't a more popular sport in the U.S. I always had trouble in high school because I didn't play the more 'popular' sports with getting fans to come and getting funding for our team gear. Everyone loves different sports and I think everyone should get a chance to play the sport they want.
